DMPL Community Reads

The Des Moines Public Library and Des Moines Public Schools invite families and community members to a series of special discussions of Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. The events are being held as a way to encourage open dialogue around the books school-aged children are reading, and to strengthen community connections.

Those interested in taking part in the discussion can check out a print, audio, or digital copy of Esperanza Rising from the library. Special book discussion copies are available in both English and Spanish at each location, while supplies last. No registration required to take part in the discussions.

The book is part of the DMPS 5th grade curriculum. There will also be a supplemental discussion on the Universal Discussion of Human Rights, which is also part of the curriculum. Each discussion will be led by DMPS staff, and additional Community Reads programs will be announced in the future.
