Des Moines Public Library Names Melissa McCollum as New Library Director

The Des Moines Public Library is pleased to announce that Melissa McCollum has been named the library's next library director. McCollum will begin her new role Monday, February 9.

McCollum brings both extensive library experience and deep Des Moines roots to the role. A Des Moines native and product of Des Moines Public Schools, she graduated from Roosevelt High School before earning a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a master's degree in information from the University of Michigan.

"I am honored to join the dynamic team at the Des Moines Public Library, a 159-year-old institution dedicated to promoting literacy, belonging, and opportunity for all," McCollum said. "The Des Moines Public Library played an important role in my life growing up, and it's exciting to return to Des Moines and ensure it continues as a vital community hub for information, learning, connection, and innovation."

McCollum has worked in leadership roles in libraries and other public service positions for more than 20 years. Her professional experience includes serving as library director and community services director for the city of El Segundo, California; community library manager for Los Angeles County Library; and senior recreation manager for the city of Manhattan Beach, California. She has been recognized for her effectiveness with accolades such as the American Library Association's I Love My Librarian award for outstanding community service.

"Melissa stood out from other candidates in our search through her passion for the community role of libraries," said Tim Hickman, president of the Des Moines Public Library Board of Trustees. "She is a thoughtful, compassionate leader who will continue to make the Des Moines Public Library indispensable to everyone in our city. We have many great things to look forward to during her tenure."

"Working with our staff, the city, Library Board of Trustees, Des Moines Public Library Foundation, partners, and the public, I look forward to exploring how we can expand access to library facilities, collections, programs, and services to meet the needs of all Des Moines residents," McCollum said.

McCollum's selection is the culmination of a nationwide search process that began after former library director Susan A. Woody retired in June. The search was led by Bradbury Miller Associates.
