Note: This program will be recorded.

The instructor will be using the following recipe. Please gather the ingredients prior to the program if you would like to cook along. If you don't have a tortilla press, no worries! The instructor will also present an alternative method using a cutting board.

  • 1 cup of masa flour
  • 1 tsp of olive oil or other type of cooking oil
  • Warm water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

*Equipment Needed

  • Mixing bowl of any kind
  • Tortilla press or cutting board
  • Quart-size Ziploc bag or plastic grocery bag, cut into two squares
  • Cast iron skillet or any skillet

In a bowl mix the masa flour, salt and pepper, and olive oil. Add water to the masa until your dough is nice and mixed and does not stick in your hands. Form balls the size of a golf ball. Using your cut plastic bag, place a masa ball between two sheets of plastic and place it in the tortilla press to press. If you don't have a tortilla press, place a cutting board on top of the plastic-covered dough and press down to flatten.

Place an iron skillet over medium heat. Using a paper towel, grease the pan with enough oil that the tortilla won't stick but not enough to fry the tortilla. Remove the plastic from the pressed dough, add the tortilla to the skillet, and cook both sides until nice and golden brown. Some spots might be darker than golden brown. Keep warm in a tortilla warmer or wrapped in foil.

*Please note that this recipe will require the use of kitchen tools such as a knife and a hot stove top.
