Event Details

Renters are protected from discrimination, assured a livable apartment, protected from some unfair lease terms, and given other important rights under Iowa and federal law. Join the library and Iowa Legal Aid to learn about your rights as a renter and what steps you can take if your rights are being violated.

About the speaker:

Iowa Legal Aid is a statewide, not-for-profit law firm providing hope, dignity, and justice to low-income Iowans, seniors, veterans, new Iowans, and other vulnerable groups through legal education and representation. We do not charge for our services. We help with many civil legal issues – protection of victims of domestic and sexual violence, eviction defense and landlord tenant law, acquiring and protecting federally assisted housing benefits, housing discrimination, consumer protection (debt collection and relief from consumer fraud), representation of workers in unemployment matters, assistance with tax problems, and many more. Learn more by going to our website at

Alex Kornya is the litigation director and general counsel of Iowa Legal Aid, and has been with the organization for almost 14 years. In this time, he has focused his practice on housing, consumer protection, employment, and collateral consequences, and has advocated for the rights of low-income tenants all the way from small claims court to the Iowa Supreme Court. Alex was the recipient of the 2021 Iowa Bar Association Rolland Grefe Award, and has published multiple articles in national publications about consumer protection for people caught up in the criminal justice system.
