Library Reopening with Limited, In-Person Services

Curbside Pickup Now Available

Step by step. That’s our motto as we move to safely begin to reopen our six library buildings after closing them in March to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. Making the decision to close was the result of a deliberate, difficult, and thoughtful process with an emphasis placed on safety. As we start the process of reopening our buildings, we're taking things one step at a time.

NEW HOURS: Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 13, curbside pickup hours of operation changes at the East Side, Forest Avenue, North Side, and South Side Libraries, with the service now available from 10 AM-1 PM Monday through Saturday. This change is occurring as we introduce DMPL Express, a collection of limited, in-person services. For more information on these changes, go to our reopening page.

At the Central Library and Franklin Avenue Library, the pickup window and curbside pickup programs will continue with their current extended hours.

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. Place materials on hold one of two ways (must have an active library card):
    • Using the online catalog at dmpl.org
    • Calling the DMPL at (515) 283-4152
    • NOTE: If you do not have a Des Moines Public Library card and want to use curbside pickup, fill out a digital card application form to receive a temporary card.
       
  2. Wait for a notification that your items are ready to be picked up at your preferred DMPL location. You’ll be notified by your preferred method of communication: email, phone, or text. (Call us if you want to change your method of communication.) Do not arrive until you receive your notification; your materials will not be ready.
     
  3. Pick up your items at East Side, Forest Avenue, Franklin Avenue, North Side, and South Side Library. At Central Library, drive up to the pickup window on Grand Avenue. At the other locations, head to the parking lot and park your car. Then follow these instructions:
    1. Call the phone number on the sign posted outside
    2. Provide your name, library card number and vehicle color, make, and model
    3. Remain in your car, with the windows rolled up, and open your trunk.
    4. Library staff will bring materials to your car in a plastic bag and place them in your trunk. If you do not have a car and will walk, ride a bike, or take the bus, call before your arrival to discuss a pickup arrangement.
    5. If you do not have a cell phone, we recommend you choose Central Library for your pickup location. Please call us at (515) 283-4152 if you have questions.
    6. Staff will not accept returns during pickup. All returns must be placed in book drops.

 

Curbside Pickup FAQ

You can either place a hold on a material using the catalog at dmpl.org, or you can call the library at (515)283-4152 and place your holds over the phone.

You may make payments online with your credit or debit card. DMPL will not accept cash at this time. If you need additional assistance with paying fines, please call us at (515) 283-4152.

We will let you know via your preferred method of communication (email, phone, text). Do not come to the library until we notify you that your items are ready. If you want to change your preferred method of communication, please call us at (515) 283-4152.

In addition, the library is working with minimal staff in order to practice safe and effective social distancing. It may take a little bit longer to get your materials ready, so please be patient!

You can check out up to 50 items at one time, with up to five of those being DVDs.

All physical books (including Book Club Sets), audiobooks, and DVDs. In addition, we are temporarily waiving the $1 checkout fee for DVDs.

Please place all materials in the outdoor book returns. Staff will not accept any returns during pickup.

Nothing! We are hard at work on getting all items checked in and processed, but due to high volume, smaller staff due to social distancing guidelines, and our process of quarantining returned books, you will see them on your account for a little longer than usual. This is normal, and know that they will get checked in and there are no overdue fees. 

After being notified that your holds are ready to be picked up, you will have eight days to get them before they are returned to our shelves for the next patron.

Library staff will be wearing PPE during these contactless pickups. In addition, all books will be quarantined for three business days when they are returned to the library before being returned to the shelf or checked out to the next patron.
