The Des Moines Public Library has a rich history of supporting art. In 1916, the library worked with the newly formed Des Moines Association of Fine Arts to make a gallery space available to “purchase and hold title to paintings acquired for the benefit of the public, and to bring exhibitions to the city.” That collection eventually became part of the Des Moines Art Center when it opened in 1948. In 2016, the Central Library opened an art gallery to celebrate Iowa artists and bolster creative and expressive energy in the Des Moines community.
