Program Description

Event Details

Get outside and enjoy nature's winter wonders at this informational presentation and relaxing hike guided by Iowa Master Naturalist John Donner. John's brief indoor presentation gives you keys to winter tree identification, which are then put to use during the engaging hike on South Side Library grounds, where you will encounter more than 20 different tree species. By the end of the program you will be well on your way to learning to identify trees even in the deepest parts of winter.

Please dress for outside weather; boots and/or snow shoes encouraged!

After his retirement from the corporate world and legal profession, John Donner embarked on his “second career” as an amateur naturalist.  A life-long outdoors enthusiast, he volunteers regularly as a Teacher/Naturalist for the Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapids, conducting programs for school kids and the general public. In 2018, John completed his certification as an Iowa Master Naturalist. As his capstone project, he wrote a winter tree identification guidebook for Indian Creek Nature Center called “What’s That Tree?” The book has been used as part of the curriculum for the Iowa Master Naturalist program and has led to him conducting field trips and public programs on winter tree identification, which he thoroughly enjoys.
