The Danish word “Hygge” has no easy translation into English. It combines hospitality, coziness, contentment, mindfulness, and connection. Some claim that hygge is one of the reasons Denmark has often been ranked the “Happiest Country in the World.” But do you have to be Danish to “hygge”? Are you achieving “hygge” if you light a candle and wear fuzzy slippers? Come for a cozy evening (bring your own slippers) and see what tips from the Danes might be applicable in our own daily lives.

Tova Brandt is currently the Albert Ravenholt Curator of Danish-American Culture at the Museum of Danish America where she is responsible for exhibition programs and presentations. She also served as curator for Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah.
