Curbside Pickup Now Available

All locations of the Des Moines Public Library are now open for full hours for in-person services. Each branch opens at 10:00 AM (9:00 am at the Central Library). Full curbside hours are below. For more information on these changes, including the new hours, go to our reopening page.

PLEASE NOTE: When placing an item on hold to be picked up at Franklin, there are now two options. If you would like to continue using Curbside Pickup, please select Franklin Ave. Curbside. If you would like to pick up your holds inside the building while browsing, please choose Franklin Ave. Library.

When placing an item on hold to be picked up at Central Library, you must choose your location as Central Library (inside the building) *or* Central Pick-up Window (drive-up pickup window).

There is no Curbside Pickup or Pickup Window service on Sundays.

  1. Place materials on hold one of two ways (must have an active library card):
    • Using the online catalog at
    • Calling the DMPL at (515) 283-4152
    • NOTE: If you do not have a Des Moines Public Library card and want to use curbside pickup, fill out a digital card application form to receive a temporary card.
  2. Wait for a notification that your items are ready to be picked up at your preferred DMPL location. You’ll be notified by your preferred method of communication: email, phone, or text. (Call us if you want to change your method of communication.) Do not arrive until you receive your notification; your materials will not be ready.
  3. Pick up your items at East Side, Forest Avenue, Franklin Avenue, North Side, and South Side Library. At Central Library, drive up to the pickup window on Grand Avenue. At the other locations, head to the parking lot and park your car. Then follow these instructions:
    1. Call the phone number on the sign posted outside
    2. Provide your name, library card number and vehicle color, make, and model
    3. Remain in your car, with the windows rolled up, and open your trunk.
    4. Library staff will bring materials to your car in a plastic bag and place them in your trunk. If you do not have a car and will walk, ride a bike, or take the bus, call before your arrival to discuss a pickup arrangement.
    5. If you do not have a cell phone, please call us at (515) 283-4152 if you have questions about options for picking up your holds.
    6. Staff will not accept returns during pickup. All returns must be placed in book drops.


Curbside Pickup FAQ

You can either place a hold on a material using the catalog at, or you can call the library at (515)283-4152 and place your holds over the phone.

You may make payments online with your credit or debit card. When library buildings are open, you can pay your fines inside. If you need additional assistance with paying fines, please call us at (515) 283-4152.

We will let you know via your preferred method of communication (email, phone, text). Do not come to the library until we notify you that your items are ready. If you want to change your preferred method of communication, please call us at (515) 283-4152.

In addition, the library is working with minimal staff in order to practice safe and effective social distancing. It may take a little bit longer to get your materials ready, so please be patient!

You can check out up to 50 items at one time.

All physical books (including Book Club Sets), audiobooks, and DVDs.

Yes! You can contact our Book Chat team to get personalized book suggestions, reading lists, and to arrange to pick up a Book Bundle. See HERE.

You may return the items both inside and outside in the appropriate book return spots.

Nothing! We are hard at work on getting all items checked in and processed, but due to high volume, smaller staff due to social distancing guidelines, and our process of quarantining returned books for 24 hours, you will see them on your account for a little longer than usual. 

After being notified that your holds are ready to be picked up, you will have six days to get them before they are returned to our shelves for the next patron.

Library staff will be wearing PPE during these contactless pickups. In addition, all books will be quarantined for 24 hours when they are returned to the library before being returned to the shelf or checked out to the next patron.

If you want to use curbside pickup but don't have a card, please fill out an online application for a digital card or come into any library during DMPL Express hours to fill out an application.
