Adventure Pass temporarily shut down in 2025

Due to software issues affecting all libraries using the service, the Iowa Adventure Pass program will temporarily shut down in 2025. Any reservation already made for 2025 will be honored, but we encourage anyone with a current reservation to print those passes immediately. Customers can still make new reservations for passes that must be used by December 31, 2024. The service will return at a later time. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Starting this fall, there will be more after-school programs than ever before at Des Moines Public Library locations. A new partnership between Des Moines Public Library and After School Arts Program (ASAP) will bring unique and meaningful arts learning experiences to four library locations every Monday through Thursday once school starts back up. These programs are being provided thanks to a $100,000 grant awarded by Bravo Greater Des Moines.

Beginning in September, four DMPL branches will each host a free arts class – led by a professional, paid ASAP teaching artist – each week. No registration is required, and kids can just drop in when they can for any class that interests them.

Subjects will vary each month, with ASAP’s teaching artists leading classes in visual arts, dance, drama, music, literary and culinary arts, and more. The programs are designed to be enjoyed by kids age 5-14, and every program includes a free snack.

Michelle Bolton King, ASAP Executive Director, is excited about giving kids the chance to explore their creativity while also developing skills important to their future.

Arts involvment strengthens self-awareness, critical thinking, collaboration, communication skills, and perseverance,” King said. Offering free arts classes at the library provides equal and open access to arts participation.

ASAP and DMPL staff work closely to ensure the programs meet the unique needs of Des Moines children and families. This is why snacks are a part of every ASAP Days program. Kids that come to the library as a safe place after school might be hungry. Providing those snacks as part of the class fulfills a simple need.

“Working with community partners like ASAP to provide free, consistent programming for kids is a great example of how we provide unique opportunities that you won’t find anywhere else,” Susan A. Woody, Des Moines Public Library Director, said.

These classes will continue into the future, and themes will change each month. In October, those themes are:

  • ASAP Mondays at Forest Avenue Library: Nature Art, 4 PM
  • ASAP Tuesdays at East Side Library: Paper Art, 3:30 PM
  • ASAP Wednesdays at North Side Library: Fiber Art, 3:30 PM
  • ASAP Thursdays at South Side Library: Paper Art, 4 PM
