The Foundation raises dollars to support the programs and services that just can't be covered through the library's normal annual operating budget.

What do those dollars do?
Foundation dollars support annual Summer Reading programming for children and teens. Your support last year allowed us to grant the library $142,000 to reach out to thousands of adults, children, and teens.

Summer Reading »
This eight-week community outreach program takes place in all six locations of the Des Moines Public Library system. The goals of the Summer Reading program include motivating children to read over their summer break from school, developing positive attitudes about reading and books, encouraging regular use of the library and attracting new users to the public library system.

Iowa Author Awards »
For the last twelve years, the Des Moines Public Library Foundation has gathered friends, donors, and community advocates for an annual celebration to honor Iowa's literary heritage, both past and future. Three Iowa authors are chosen to receive this annual award, along with a Friend of Literacy.

AViD (Authors Visiting in Des Moines) »
The AViD (Authors Visiting in Des Moines) program is a free speaker series which is open to the public and designed to appeal to a diverse audience in the greater metro community. Nationally known authors will appear in a variety of venues to discuss the challenges and rewards that come with being an author.

Honors or Memorials
A gift can be made in honor of, or in memory of, someone you care about. Should you wish to make a gift to our book collection in honor or in memory simply forward the gift to the Foundation with instructions and/or contact information and we will work with directly on the gift. A bookplate may be added at the time the book(s) is added to the collection.
